Nintendo provided a statement to IGN today stating that the NES Classic console will be seeing its last shipments of 2017 in North America in April.
Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.
What’s unclear from the statement is if more consoles are expected to ship next year. Nintendo has been accused of a slow production rate in order to increase demand, but at this point it would seem that they just did not have a good idea of the demand at the outset. Consider yourself lucky if you picked up one of these consoles and enjoy playing as Simon Belmont while the rest of us look on.
