Early Friday Nintendo announced the release of a new 2DS XL handheld. With all rumors pointing toward the discontinuing of the DS series in favor of the Switch, Nintendo surprised most by instead adding to the series lineup. The 2DS XL provides similar functionality to the 3DS XL, but removes the 3D features, often considered as a gimmick to most audiences. The 2DS XL has a bigger screen than the existing 2DS and offers a protective clam shell design. The new handheld will be able to play all 3DS games, including the new 3DS XL exclusives, and “most” of the DS games. The 2DS XL has an MSRP of $149.99US and will be released July 28.
